Meeting Meeting No. 1442 — William Casey King, Executive Director, Yale Center for Analytic Sciences, Yale School of Public Health, “On Ambition.”

From rags to riches, log house to White House, enslaved to liberator, ghetto to CEO, ambition drives the American dream. Yet for centuries, ambition was considered a dangerous vice, described as everything from a “canker on the soul” to the antithesis of Christ. In this talk, Yale’s Casey King recounts the strange history of ambition: its trajectory from vice to problematic American virtue.

Some praise for Ambition, A History (Yale University Press, 2013)

“An important book [that] helps us understand where we have been and where we are going at a crucial moment for our culture and our role in the world.” –Lawrence H. Summers, Former Secretary of the Treasury of the United Sates

“[A] masterpiece of cultural and intellectual history…written with clarity and elegance..combin[ing] sources and discoveries with larger economic and political contexts usually missing from the history of ideas.” —David Brion Davis, Sterling Professor Emeritus, Yale University

“Truly groundbreaking, vital, profound, deeply nuanced and subtle…One of the most important and original [works] I’ve read.” —John Stauffer, Professor of English, Harvard University

“Extremely important, deeply researched, very well written, and, yes, extraordinarily ambitious.”—Steven Mintz, Columbia University
