Dr. Springer, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, Section of Infectious Disease, is an expert in the intersection of HIV, opiod use disorder (OUD) and the criminal justice system. She has studied successful interventions not only to reduce opioid use for this population, but also to help them comply with antiretroviral therapy to keep their viral load suppressed, so both individuals and public health benefit. During her talk, she will present an overview of the U.S. criminal justice system (CJS), the health disparities that exist within our CJS including higher substance use disorders and HIV, and the impact on the community after release and how investing in treatment to prevent relapse can benefit reduction of return to substance use, as well as reduce complications of HIV and other communicable infectious diseases related to injection drug use in the community.
